Curtin Springs Wayside Inn & Cattle Station

Now

All the water needed on the homestead is pumped from a bore into storage tanks for use. This storage provides a limited amount of available water at any point in time. A tap left on inadvertently means there is no water for anyone in the morning. The bore runs during the day and must be watched constantly, serviced regularly and prayed over intermittently.

The electricity is all generated on site, with a generator running 24 hours a day. (That is the engine noise you can hear). The generator is the heart and soul of the homestead settlement area. Without it there are no air conditioners/heaters, water, fridges (cold beer!!), petrol, phone, hot water. The list is endless. The generators are also watched constantly, serviced regularly and given more TLC than any of the women on the property.

Instead of employing several stockmen, the cattle work is done primarily by the family with the aid of modern technology.

30-40 buses pull in off the road every day and we provide meals and accommodation to several thousand people every year.

We can have up to 20 people working here at a time and we employ staff on a long term or short term basis, depending on the season. Some of our staff have been here for 5 years.

Supplies come primarily from Alice Springs or Adelaide, with the truck coming once a week. (A bit different to the 3 monthly camel trains!!!).

The mail comes 3 or 5 days a week on the bus, depending on the season.

And just a reminder that the Bough Shed IS the centre of the known universe.
